Case Study

MOC - Alexandria, Egypt

The Egyptian national oil company EGPC initially approached IES, at OMC 1999 held in Ravenna. They had been impressed with what they had seen; in particular the networking opportunities created by the conference. EGPC enquired whether it would be possible to recreate something similar in Egypt.

A subsequent meeting was held in Rome, where IES were invited to Egypt for a fact finding mission and feasibility study. Our Egyptian partners were keen to host their event in the beautiful city of Alexandria. There was a major problem to overcome! The new conference facility was still under construction and no alternative exhibition space would be available in the city for some time.

Our investigations subsequently revealed that there would be serious logistical problems to overcome, with virtually no facilities available locally. However, EGPC were very keen to go ahead, offering every assistance in obtaining the necessary local permissions and the all important support from the Egyptian Oil and Gas Ministry.

At face value the problems seemed insurmountable! The obvious logistical problems and lack of any local facilities, plus language issues and compliance with very different local procedures, were very daunting. Despite all this, we believed that this partnership opportunity would pay dividends in the long term and was worth the challenge. We decided to press ahead with the project.

We soon discovered that the only viable option was to ship a complete temporary exhibition pavilion from Europe. The exhibition site provided had previously been a luna park and had to be completely cleared before we could erect the pavilion. We had to install toilet facilities, bring in an electrical supply, catering facilities, as well as overcome the serious doubts of local companies concerned whether to participating in this strange new event to be held in a tent - in Alexandria!

Both sides worked hard together to ensure that this inaugural the event got off to the best possible start. The Egyptian Ministry adopted a very hands-on approach and proved to be very supportive indeed. MOC 2000 was subsequently launched with the help and support of the vast majority of Egypt's Petroleum Sector organisations. The social programme, including a gala dinner, golf tournament, concert, had never been attempted at an oil & gas show in Egypt before. The local business community, exhibitors and conference delegates all bonded perfectly, ensuring a very a successful launch event.

MOC has now been held a total of six times and continues to grow from strength to strength. Indeed MOC 2010 was over 500% bigger than our inaugural event held ten years ago!

MOC has proved to be a fine example of international close co-operation between two organisations, working together to achieve their separate objectives. By combining their resources, they have solve the problems they encountered on the way and overcome what otherwise would have been an impossible task.

The result is now a commercially successful exhibition and conference that provides a genuine opportunity for local industry to meet and create new business with their international partners.
